Mill Vineyard, Arthurs Seat Road Technical Info Altitude : 270m above sea level Coordinates: 38*21’48’’ south, 144* 58’38’ East Average rainfall: 900mm Cropping: 1.8 tons/acre Clone: I10V5 (2.2 acres) Planted : 1994 Trellising system: VSP and cane pruned Vineyard orientation : gentle northerly slope with vineyard rows running due North. The Mill Hill vineyard lies 270m above sea level, and is the highest and one of the more exposed sites in the region. This ensures a long ripening period which creates high levels of natural acidity which persist through to the wine.

Wine Making

The fruit is handpicked in two picks, and whole bunched pressed using a gentle champagne press cycle. No enzymes or sulfur are used at the press tray and the juice is oxidatively handled to get rid of oxidative enzymes early on in the winemaking process. The wine is left at ambient and transferred to barrel with full solids and minimal sulfur is added.

Tasting Notes

An open and expressive Chardonnay with lifted lemon curd and spice on the nose. The palate shows yellow peaches, rich creaminess and crisp minerality. A well-balanced Chardonnay, with a beautiful length and floral finish.

Polperro are making excellent regional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but have risen through the pack with their own imprint on the Mornington staples. Expect saline/sea spray character, nougat oak rippling gently through creamy stone fruit character and a core of grape-fruity acidity bright through the wine. Classy stuff. Higher-end feel through and through. 94 POINTS – Mike Bennie
